Quake Wars released early this month and to our delight it has turned out to be a fantastic game. Now a week in, we have 4GibMe, Johnny-O, Arson, Haagis, Sleddog, Nadrak and my self in the game kicking some ass.
The game is basicly BattleField 2142 in the quake universe. The engine runs real well, and seems to be quite scalable. 6800GT or 7600GT's should beable to run the game fairly with a decent processor and ram.
With about 1000-2000 people playing at any given time, the community seems slow to grow.
Plenty of great ranking servers are online for us to play on, and although we have not picked a set of favorites yet, I'm starting to see some regularly full servers out there with great connections.
Anyhow, I just wanted to post some type of news, thank you for reading and have fun fraggin.
-- Edit --
After playing the game I realize its nothing like battlefield, its much much more, and I intend to update this post some time to better explain.

With the time difference it gets a little tricky to coordinate game times, but luckily this past weekend I was able to spend some slow time getting back in touch with the west coast boys and play a little quake wars. I would have to say, on a personal note; one of my favorite moments went like this; I was Sniping for the GDF and had deployed the third-eye cam that also shows a short radar range. We had just turned over an objective and the battle was moving onto the next stage. I saw a little red blip in my radar turn green and knew there was a Strogg infiltrator about to move back across enemy lines posing as a GDF. I looked down from my perch and saw him running off. Took aim, and caught him in the back just before he went behind a wall. The screen read NI:Sleddog (Sniper Rifle) NI: Johny-O. Oh man! I have to say, it felt pretty damn good. “You sneaky devil” I thought. It had been awhile since I’d felt that little rush that comes with pwning a clan friend. I know some of you guys are fence sitting on quake wars. But I’m of the opinion that this game will do for online team gaming what BF1942 did when it first came out. The developers have a lot of time really thinking about each map and what it means to play for different sides of the teams. Each with it’s own capabilities; it really helps one to work in unison with your teammates. Not to say there aren’t great opportunities to go it alone. Even when I was out sniping, I really felt like I was covering my teams collective asses. There have been many moments so far that I would catch an enemy trying to sneak around my teammates and I’d squeeze off a few shots to slow the onslaught without any being wiser. The objectives really seem to keep players focused enough that a sniper can really do his job. At one point I had emptied my 40 shots with a kill on every third shot. I had forgotten how much I’d loved sniping. I guess the real kudos is to Id software and it’s new megatexture technology. By comparison it’d have to say my rig is fairly old. I haven’t done any major upgrades since leaving Vancouver a little over three years ago. I’m running a P4 2.4 ghz with 2 gigs ram and a Radeon X850XT. At first, the demo didn’t run. But I updated my drivers and alas it was like the world was new again. I’m running it on my Acer 19” wide screen at 1440x900 res and am just blown away with how smooth it is on this old cluncker of a rig. So, if any of you die-hard “realistic” gamers were considering it…I would say, “buy it”. You’re just going to waste that 39.95$ on a hooker downtown anyways. Besides, COD4 is coming soon anyways, and though I’ve heard it’s good, I’d be surprised if they spent that much time thinking about multiplayer as much as Splash Damage did with Quake Wars. Suck it up fellas and join us in the struggle to save/take earth. “Cock-a-doodle-Do!” Sleddog |
